Here is how you can install a custom recovery on Samsung Galaxy devices. The TWRP or CWM recovery installation procedure is a bit different for Samsung phones than that for other Android devices. It requires an Odin software which can flash files with .tar or .tar.md5 extensions that the packages for Samsung usually come in.
A custom recovery is useful if you are looking forward to modifying the system on your Android device. A number of things are possible with a TWRP (TeamWin Recovery Project) custom recovery. For instance, you can gain root access, flash a custom ROM, apply custom MODS like a sound mod, or even replace or update system files to bring them into your benefit.
Before you proceed, it is highly recommended that you backup everything including Apps, Data, Media, etc. just in case anything goes wrong.

Prerequisites

How to Install TWRP Recovery on Samsung Galaxy Devices Using Odin
Step 1: Download the compatible TWRP file for your for your Galaxy device. Extract the zip file to get the firmware with .tar or .tar.md5 extension and place at a location where you can easily locate it in your PC.
Step 2: Now boot your device into Download/Odin Mode. To do so, turn off your device completely and then press and hold Power button + Volume Down + Home keys for a few seconds. If you see a warning sign press Volume up/ Volume down to get the Odin screen.
Step 3: If you already have Odin software on your PC then simply run the Odin3_3.10.7.exe file. If not, then download the Odin3.zip file from the download section and extract it. Run Odin software as administrator.
Step 4: While your device is still in the Odin Mode, connect your device to your PC using a USB cable.
Step 5: After a successful connection, the ID: COM in the Odin should turn Blue and an Added!! message should be displayed in the Log tab. In case your device doesn’t show up in Odin, then you can troubleshoot it with the steps given at the end of the tutorial.
Step 6: Now click on AP button and add the firmware file by navigating to the file path. Once added, it should show like this — File Pathrecovery.tar.md5
Step 7: Take care that only Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time are selected in the Options tab. Do not check Re-Partition.
Step 8: Once done, verify everything and proceed with installation by selecting Start button.
Step 9: When you get a PASS! message in the Log tab on your Odin software, that means firmware has successfully been installed and the device will restart itself. If not then reboot manually.
Now that you have successfully installed a custom recovery, you are all set to flash custom packages onto your device.
How to Fix Bootloop on Samsung Galaxy Device?
If you come across boot loop or your Samsung Galaxy device is stuck at the boot logo then factory reset your device from the recovery. To do so, turn of your device (also remove the battery if applicable and put it back again) and reboot into recovery mode by press and holding Power + Volume down + Home keys for a few seconds. From the Recovery, select Wipe Data / Factory Reset. Confirm the action and reboot once done. Your device should now boot up.

The file a.tar.md5 contains the MD5 hash of the file a.tar. The tar and the md5 files are totally different files. You can not get a tar file from a tar.md5 file.
Edit: it turns out there are two types of .tar.md5 files:
- Just MD5 sum. A file of 32 bytes. It is typically in a directory along with a .tar file, such as here. It is not possible to reconstruct the original tar file from the md5 file.
- A tar archive with an appended MD5-sum. Several megabytes. Can be extracted by the standard tar tool, or it can be written to a phone with ODIN.
From what I understand this is a simple means of adding a checksum onto a tar file. Since the tar standard states that the end of the tar file is two successive blank 'entries' in a row, all data past that point is ignored by 'tar -x'. So the android dev community has apparently taken to simply concatting the output of md5 to the end of this file.
