With the vSphere Web Client, you can access a virtual machine's desktop by launching a console to the virtual machine. From the console, you can perform activities in the virtual machine such as configure operating system settings, run applications, monitor performance, and so on.

Search for a virtual machine and select it from the search results list.

In the Guest OS Details pane on the Summary tab, click Launch console.

The virtual machine console opens in a new tab of the Web browser.

Click anywhere inside the console window to enable your mouse, keyboard, and other input devices to work in the console.

(Optional) Press Ctrl+Alt to release the cursor from the console window and work outside the console window.

If you're looking to connect to a ESX machine, without the heavy overhead of the vSphere client then you can use the VMware Remote Console. Note

  • The VMRC console port 903 over TCP should be opened if there is a firewall between the client browser and the ESXi hosts.

  • The standalone VMRC plug-in is only supported for system administrators and is not currently supported for end users.

Limitations of Using the VMRC Plug-in with Internet Explorer Browsers

When using the VMRC plug-in with Internet Explore browsers, the following limitations are observed:

  • When a VM is accessed from Internet Explorer, the change in connection state is not properly displayed even after the VM is connected.

  • When USB devices are connected to or disconnected from the target virtual machine, there is no response that the USB has been connected or disconnected.

This is because the VMRC browser plug-in does not properly handle events for Internet Explorer.
